ChatGPT Pro 500: Is It Worth It?

ChatGPT Pro 500 costs $500 per month and includes 25 times the Plus usage allowance plus GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast. This guide compares it with Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Business, explains the Pro 200 change and shows who can use the extra capacity.

ChatGPT Pro 500: Is It Worth It?

Last updated: October 2, 2026

ChatGPT Pro 500 is OpenAI's $500 per month plan with 25 times the ChatGPT Plus usage allowance and the only self-serve access to GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast. OpenAI launched Pro 500 at DevDay on September 29, 2026. Pro 500 is worth the price for one kind of user: a person who runs out of Pro 200 capacity in ChatGPT Work and Codex, or who loses paid time waiting for GPT-6 Astra to generate. For everyone else, a lower plan covers the same features.

Plan facts come from OpenAI's About ChatGPT Pro tiers help article, the ChatGPT pricing page and OpenAI's DevDay 2026 announcements post.

What is ChatGPT Pro 500?

ChatGPT Pro 500 is the highest of 3 ChatGPT Pro tiers. OpenAI's help article lists Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500 per month, and states that "Pro 500 offers the highest included usage of the three plans."

Pro 500 adds 2 things to the Pro plan, in the words of OpenAI's DevDay post: "Pro 500 adds 25× the Plus usage allowance and Ultrafast access." The help article confirms that "among Pro plans, Ultrafast is available only on Pro 500."

Pro 500 is billed monthly. Annual billing is not available on Pro.

What does ChatGPT Pro 500 include?

ChatGPT Pro 500 includes every Pro plan feature plus the 25 times allowance and Ultrafast. The Pro card on the ChatGPT pricing page lists 9 items on top of Plus, and 5 of them shape a buying decision.

  • GPT-6 Astra reasoning. Pro includes GPT-6 Astra in Chat (as GPT-6 Pro), ChatGPT Work and Codex. Plus includes Astra in Work and Codex only.
  • Longer Work and Codex sessions. Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 have no 5-hour usage limit in Work and Codex. Plus has a 5-hour window and a weekly limit.
  • A dot. The Pro card lists "Dot, your always-on agent". Our OpenAI Dots explainer covers what a dot does and where Pro users are excluded.
  • Maximum memory and context. The Pro card says "Maximum memory and context", and the Plus card says "Expanded memory and context".
  • Maximum deep research and unlimited, faster image creation. Unlimited use is subject to abuse guardrails.

The pricing page shows one Pro column, so the 3 Pro tiers differ only in allowance and Ultrafast in the pages reviewed. OpenAI does not publish a file storage figure per Pro tier.

How does Pro 500 compare with Plus, Pro 100 and Pro 200?

Pro 500 costs 25 times the Plus price and includes 25 times the Plus allowance.

PlanPrice per monthUsage allowanceUltrafast
Plus$20Baseline, with a 5-hour limit in Work and CodexNo
Pro 100$100More than Plus, multiple not publishedNo
Pro 200$20010 times Plus for new subscribers (reported)No
Pro 500$50025 times PlusYes

OpenAI's help article gives no multiple for Pro 100 or Pro 200. The Pro 200 figure comes from Business Insider and The Next Web.

The arithmetic is the main finding. Plus costs $20 for 1 unit of allowance, and Pro 500 costs $500 for 25 units, so the price per unit is the same $20. Pro 500 carries no volume discount. The $500 buys 3 things Plus lacks: the full allowance on one account, no 5-hour limit and Ultrafast.

Our GPT-6 Astra vs Sol vs Luna comparison shows which models each plan reaches.

What changed for Pro 200?

OpenAI reopened Pro 200 to new subscribers on September 29, 2026 with a lower allowance at the same $200 price. OpenAI's help article states: "New subscriptions that aren't eligible for grandfathering include a lower usage allowance than previously offered with Pro 200 to reflect our increasingly efficient models."

There are 4 rules for existing subscribers, all from the help article.

  • Eligibility window. Grandfathering applies to an account with an active Pro 200 subscription at any point from September 22, 2026 through 10 a.m. Pacific Time on September 29, 2026.
  • End date. Eligible subscribers keep the previous allowance through October 29, 2026 while the subscription is active.
  • After the end date. The subscription moves to the lower allowance, and the price stays $200 per month.
  • No Pro 500 features. Keeping the old allowance does not add Ultrafast.

OpenAI's help article does not state the size of the cut. The Next Web reports that Pro 200's included Work and Codex usage falls from 20 times to 10 times the Plus allowance from October 30, 2026, and that GPT-6 Pro messages in Chat fall from 200 to 100 per week. Business Insider reports the same 2 figures.

The reports of a "transition credit" and of an October 29 deadline describe the same change. OpenAI documents the October 29, 2026 date. Business Insider reports a one-time credit for existing subscribers, and The Next Web puts that credit at $2,500 of usage credits that expire at the end of 2026. The credit does not appear in OpenAI's help article, which says only that affected users "will receive an email with additional details".

What is Ultrafast and how fast does it use the allowance?

Ultrafast is a speed mode for GPT-6 Astra that generates tokens up to 8 times faster in Codex and uses the Pro 500 allowance at 8 times the standard rate. Ultrafast runs in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

Speed modeRate against included allowanceRate against purchased credits
Standard1 times1 times
Fast2.5 times2 times
GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast8 times6 times

OpenAI notes that these are "allowance consumption rates, not guarantees of faster performance". The Next Web reports that OpenAI puts Ultrafast at up to 300 tokens per second in Codex.

The 8 times rate changes the value of the plan. A Pro 500 subscriber who runs every Astra task in Ultrafast gets 25 divided by 8, or about 3.1 times the Plus allowance in Standard-speed terms. Ultrafast draws on purchased credits once the included allowance is used.

Ultrafast is not sold as an add-on. OpenAI states that buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not add Ultrafast at launch. Plus and Business do not include Ultrafast. Ultrafast for GPT-6.1 Sol is marked "coming soon"; the model is covered in our GPT-6.1 Sol guide.

How does Pro 500 compare with ChatGPT Business?

ChatGPT Business is a per-seat team plan with admin controls, and no Business seat includes Ultrafast. OpenAI's help center lists Standard seats at $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually, and Premium seats at $125, or $100 billed annually.

FeatureBusiness StandardBusiness PremiumPro 500
Usage allowanceSame estimates as Plus5 times Standard25 times Plus
5-hour limitYesNoNo
GPT-6 Pro in Chat15 messages per month50 messages per weekFigure not published
DotsNot listedYesYes

A Business workspace needs at least 2 seats and adds a dedicated workspace, unified billing and admin controls that Pro lacks. Pro 500 is a personal plan for 1 user.

Can a Pro 500 allowance be used in other apps?

Yes, a Pro 500 allowance works in partner apps through Sign in with ChatGPT. OpenAI's help article states that Plus and Pro users can let a participating app use their ChatGPT plan, and that eligible requests "count toward the ChatGPT Work and Codex usage included in your plan".

There are 3 rules.

  • Partner list. OpenAI launched with 16 partners. The directory lists 12 apps with plan usage, including Devin, Notion and Vercel.
  • Weekly cap per app. A user sets each app's limit as a percentage of weekly plan usage. OpenAI calls the limit "a cap, not a separate pool of usage".
  • Privacy boundary. Using the plan does not give the app access to ChatGPT conversations or memories.

What does $500 buy at API prices?

$500 buys about 8.3 million input tokens plus 8.3 million output tokens on GPT-6 Astra at standard API rates, or about 1.4 million of each on Astra Ultrafast. The numbers come from the OpenAI API pricing page.

API tierInput per 1MOutput per 1M1M input plus 1M output
GPT-6 Astra Standard$10$50$60
GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast$60$300$360

A developer who generates 2 million Ultrafast output tokens in a month pays $600 for output alone in the API, and a developer who generates 200,000 pays $60.

This comparison has a hard limit. OpenAI does not publish how many tokens the Pro 500 allowance holds, and OpenAI's usage documentation says API token prices are "separate from subscription usage; don't use them to estimate included tasks". The API figures show the pay-as-you-go cost of Ultrafast, not a break-even point for Pro 500.

Who can realistically use Pro 500?

Pro 500 fits 3 workloads, and a lower plan fits 3 others.

Pro 500 fits:

  • Developers who run Codex or ChatGPT Work agents for most of the working day and reach the Pro 200 limit.
  • Users who sit in interactive Astra sessions where generation speed is the bottleneck.
  • Users who route several partner apps through one ChatGPT allowance.

A lower plan fits:

  • Chat-first users. GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat are separate from the shared Work and Codex allowance.
  • Users who reach limits a few times a month. Plus and Pro subscribers can buy credits to continue past a limit.
  • Teams that need admin controls, shared billing or data residency. Those sit in Business and Enterprise.

Check Settings, then Usage, in ChatGPT before upgrading. A subscriber who never reaches the weekly limit on a current plan gains only Ultrafast from Pro 500. All DevDay announcements are in our OpenAI DevDay 2026 recap, and the ChatGPT listing tracks plan prices.
