Ivan Zhao was born in Ürümqi in north-western China, moved to Canada as a child, learned Chinese watercolour painting and picked up coding through the International Olympiad in Informatics. He studied cognitive science at the University of British Columbia and was a product designer at Inkling. He founded Notion with CTO Simon Last, and in 2015 the two moved to Kyoto and rewrote the whole product when the money ran low.
